Unraveling Memories
This installation explores the theme of nostalgia, creating a space that evokes childhood memories, real or imagined. The piece combines various types of media to immerse the viewer in the experience.
When you first see the piece, there is a painting of a person trapped inside the stomach of a stuffed animal. It is intended to represent the complex relationship between comfort and confinement we have all felt in childhood. Inside the fort below the painting are four different homemade stuffed animals--a mix of projects I made, objects I found, and gifts from people that are important to me. These little creatures (drawn on the right) carry personal histories to me and invite viewers to connect with their own pasts.
The installation becomes a sanctuary that is supposed to remind the viewer of a childhood bedroom. Upon entering, viewers are encouraged to interact with the stuffed animals by picking them up and pressing their corresponding buttons on a small keyboard. Each button triggers a projected video of the animal, which morphs into a spinning 3D model made of millions of lines. The models continuously deconstruct and reconstruct, representing the fragile and shifting nature of childhood memories as they fade and reform over time.
The motif of deconstruction is echoed throughout the space, with yarn, deconstructed fabrics, and strings woven into the environment.
